How To Get The Best Photos:
1. Lighting. I don't work from a studio--I'm a natural light kind of gal! When planning your photographs, you should consider lighting, too. If your event is going to take place in a low-lit, dark atmosphere, your photographs will represent that. Of course, this doesn't make photography impossible. You should just understand that, as a photographer, there are things I will have to do to compensate for the lack of light. When you have the luxury of choosing your lighting, natural light is always best. So, for portrait sessions (even on the day of your wedding), you should try to plan accordingly. The more natural light, the better the photos!
2. Preparation. With most events, my clients are kind enough to provide an itinerary to both myself and the participants. This helps everyone get on the same page. You should allot plenty of time for photographs and make sure to let everyone know when photographs will take place. This will keep both you and your photographer happy and stress-free. Also, you should be prepared to take the kind of photographs that you love. This means, do your homework! Check out my blog and my website and find images, poses and locations that catch your eye. Remember: imitation is the best form of flattery! Don't be afraid to let me know which images are your favorites. And, don't be afraid to practice "smiling with your eyes" in front of the mirror. Work it!
3. Understanding. It is important that you and everyone involved in your photographs understand what kind of photography I do. Send your friends and family links to my website. Have them look at my portfolio. This will help everyone to know what to expect from both myself and the photographs.
4. Trust. This is the most important tip. As your photographer, you need to trust that I will take the best photographs I possibly can. You've looked at my portfolio and have seen how I like to be creative and artistic. You must trust that I will use this creativity to interpret your day in a caring and thoughtful way. You hire me and you get me. I will treat every client (and their photographs) as a priority.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What kind of camera do you use?
I use two Canon digital SLRs with a variety of Canon lenses.
Are the prices negotiable?
Short answer: No. Long answer: My work for each couple extends far beyond the hours spent at their ceremony. For every hour spent taking photos, I spend at least 3 hours post-processing the photographs. Plus, I feel like my prices are already pretty competitive.
Can we use the free engagement shoot for something else? Can we get money off if we don't want the engagement photos?
The engagement photos were added after several requests from clients. They truly are a free addition to my services. I think it is important that we get to work together in a client/photographer relationship before the morning of your wedding. This will help relieve stress and make you feel comfortable in front of the camera. For this reason, and others, the engagement sessions cannot be substituted or exchanged.
Will you bring a backdrop to my wedding?
No. I don't have a studio and I don't have a formal studio set-up. I work with the surroundings I have. I also think that, usually, photographs without a backdrop are more interesting!
I have a mole on my nose that I hate. Can you make it disappear in photographs?
Doing this kind of Photoshop work is very, very time intensive and would significantly increase the cost of my packages. My job is to make you look your absolute best in photographs. I like to work with what you've got! Most likely, you're being too hard on yourself, anyway!
Do all of your photos look so "artsy"?
When creating my portfolio for this website, I chose the photographs that most epitomize who I am as a photographer and as an artist. When you get your complete wedding album, there will be many, many shots that are considered "traditional". Don't worry, I leave no rocks unturned.
Do you take church formals?
One of the things we'll talk about before your wedding day is how much time will be set aside for portraits. Generally, it is best to keep family portraits to a minimum. It is best for your family and friends to not have to sit through hours of posed, cookie-cutter photographs. I also prefer not to take church formals. This is for 2 reasons. First, these photos don't represent my style. And, usually, they aren't the photographs that the couples end up cherishing. Most importantly, the lighting within most churches is horrible. I don't carry a studio lighting set-up. When you have the option to take photos in natural light, why wouldn't you? If you are looking for many photos of this nature, I'd be glad to direct you to a photographer that better suits your style.
What should I wear to my portrait/engagement session?
First, decide on the mood: sexy, flirty, sporty, etc. Dress to fit this mood. Wear something comfortable--something you don't mind running around or sitting on the ground in. Try to avoid logos. Bright colors are great. If there are more than 2 people in the photograph, try to dress in the same color family. Cute shoes are ALWAYS a plus. Avoid busy patterns, they distract from your face.
Do you have liability insurance?
Yes. Most vendors are now required to present this information and I have a $1,000,000 policy.
